Roberta Rothstein
Roberta Rothstein is dedicated to helping her student's progress, through a challenging yet fun dance experience. From beginners through professionals, she helps people gain knowledge of their bodies, learn to maximize their strengths and improve their alignment, learn the techniques of jazz, hip hop or ballet, discover and bring forth their inner performer and integrate these elements for a complete dance experience. Ms. Rothstein was born and raised in New York City where she trained in ballet with Seda Suny and Finis Jhung. She then trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in Horton technique with Pat Thomas, Milton Myers and Joyce Trisler, in jazz with Nat Horne and in Graham technique with Bertram Ross, Mary Hinkson and Kenneth Pearl. Other key teachers are Dan Wagoner (modern), Marjorie Perces (Horton), Fred Benjamin and Lynn Simonson (modern jazz), Pepsi Bethel, Betsy Haug, Natasha Bowen, Suzi Taylor, Joe Lanteri, Ann Reinking and Danny Burajewski (jazz) and Louise Lattimore (Limon). In Chicago she trained with Lou Conte (founder/director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), Joseph Holmes, Randy Duncan and Anna Czjun (modern), Fred Alexson and Elizabeth Boitsov (Vaganova ballet) and Joel Hall (jazz, modern). She was invited to join Mr. Hall's company, The Joel Hall Dancers, where she was a featured company member for six years. She has also performed in musical theater in New York, Chicago and Washington in shows such as "Guys and Dolls", "Kiss Me Kate", "West Side Story", and Studs Terkel's "Working".
Her choreography has been produced throughout the US on concert stages, video, musical theater and festivals. She has choreographed national television commercials, as well as performances for musical theater, video, and cabaret. She has choreographed for Adventure Theater, the Maryland Festival of the Arts, Fraudulent Theater, the Theater Alliance and other local theaters. She appeared on the PBS children's series, "Well, Well, Well". Ms. Rothstein has taught jazz, modern, hip hop, ballet, and fitness in Washington, D.C for 19 years. She is founder and artistic director of Momentum Dance Theatre, which has brought its combination of jazz, modern and multi media theater to audiences throughout Washington and New York City. Momentum's popular production of the Jazz, Hip Hop Nutcracker, in its fourth year, will be presented this December. She has been on the faculties of Arlington Center for Dance, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, George Washington and American Universities, Joe's Movement Emporium, Jones-Haywood School of Ballet, Joy of Motion Dance Center, the Russell School of Ballet, Results the Gym, Starting Point, and the Washington Ballet. She is the recipient of individual grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Montgomery County Council on the Arts.
