Clogging & More
Clogging & More, taught by Emily Crews of Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, will focus on the great fun of clogging! Hailing originally from the Appalachian mountains, clogging is a step dance that resulted from the mixing of Irish and African dances. It is an energetic, versatile percussive dance; the footwork can be done to many kinds of music, and it can be danced in choreographed group formations or as an improvisational solo-- and everything in between! Using technique drills as a jumping-off point, traditional steps and combinations will be taught, and students will also learn how to incorporate their own rhythms within an improvisational structure. Other percussive dance styles will also be introduced. No experience is necessary; all levels are welcome.
Emily Crews is a dancer/choreographer/teacher who loves all percussive dance styles. A member of Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble since the fall of 2000, she has toured the United States performing clogging, tap dance, stepdances from Ireland, England, and Canada, and even South African gumboot dance. Emily has also performed with many other DC-area dance companies including TAPestry and CityDance Ensemble; she has choreographed dances for her own productions as well as for area modern dance companies such as Carla & Company and Jane Franklin Dance; and she also enjoys choreographing for musical theater. She has taught clogging, tap dance, and modern dance in many DC-area studios as well as on tour with Footworks. Emily is thrilled to be teaching at DC Dance Collective!
