Maria Scala

Maria regularly performs as a soloist in the Washington, D.C. area. She studied at Amor de Dios in Madrid and Fazil’s in New York, and has participated in International Flamenco Festivals in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her most influential teachers include Omayra Amaya, Adela Campallo, Rafael Campallo, Pastora Galvan, and Carmela Greco. In addition to Flamenco, her training included extensive ballet with regular performances at the Lviv National Opera. Maria toured in Germany performing folk dance. She taught and choreographed folk dance in Norway and performed for the Queen. Her studies also included jazz taught by an Alvin Ailey Dance Company member.

Flamenco Technique and Sevillanas
Thursday 7.30pm

The class focuses on fundamental Flamenco technique, including footwork (zapateado), arms (brazeo), and rhythm (compas). The class also introduces Sevillanas, a Spanish folk dance typically performed in couples and consisting of four parts (coplas). Sevillanas is becoming increasingly popular in the Washington, D.C. area, and is often performed in the local tablaos and clubs. The class is designed for students with limited or no Flamenco training. It is recommended to those who have never learned Sevillanas, and those who are familiar with the dance, but would like to improve their technique and musicality, and refine their style.

Flamenco Technique & Choreography
Thursday 8.30pm

The class is geared towards building and improving technique, including footwork (zapateado), upper body and arms (brazeo), marking (marcajes y paseos), turns (vueltas), and developing musicality (compás y contratiempo). The students will continue learning an alegría choreography, this semester focusing on escobilla, silencio, castellana, and transition into bulería. They will learn to recognize the structural components of alegría and accompany singers, dancers, guitarists with palmas. Live guitar accompaniment will be provided.
